If you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best

The quote “If you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best” is attributed to Marilyn Monroe. This quote always seems tricky to me. On the one hand I can see the point. If someone loves you then they love all of you, the good, the bad, the ugly, the beautiful etc. The problem I have with it is when the bad significantly outweighs the good. If you’re only good 25% of the time that’s a lot of bad you’re asking people to tolerate.

I’ve heard someone say the quote is referring to her physical appearance, like if you can’t love me when I’ve put on a few extra pounds then you don’t deserve me when I’m in shape and looking my best. In a scenario like that then certainly people should avoid like the plague anyone who will abandon them the moment they start looking less than perfect. The problem with that is you never know ahead of time that you’re marrying someone who is going to stop loving you moment you put on a few extra pounds or start to age. By the time you figure it out they’ve already taken the best of you.
